UNITED STATES EMBASSY - CHILE
Location: Santiago, Chile
1994
11,148 m2
Located near downtown Santiago, this prominent 5-acre site chosen for the U.S. Embassy provided a considerable design challenge, but it offers magnificent views of snow-covered mountains, the river and the downtown skyline. Prevailing seismic conditions and security requirements added to the challenge. Public and private functions are separated: the Consular and USIS sections occupy their own two story building, while Embassy offices are housed in a five story circular tower. A formal entry rotunda and service tower joins these two components. The end result is a structure that stands as a dynamic symbol of the United States and yet is highly efficient and functional.
